The Importance of Pet Dental Care

Some pet owners don't realize just how important pet dental care can be; just as having your pet brought in for an annual comprehensive wellness exam is vital, so is annual teeth cleanings and check-ups. Failing to properly care for your pet's oral health can lead to serious long-term problems, such as tooth decay, permanent tooth loss, and even gum disease.

In addition to bringing your pet in for regular dental exams and cleanings, there are also steps you can take to protect your pet's oral health at home. For starters, it is strongly recommended that you brush your pet's teeth at least once a day using a pet-safe toothpaste. This is a great way to remove plaque build-up in between professional cleanings. There are also water additives and even special treats/toys that can be used to protect your pet's dental health.

Any time your pet shows signs of dental problems, it's important to see our vet as soon as possible. Some common signs of dental issues that should not be ignored include:

  • bleeding and/or swollen gums
  • missing, loose, or cracked teeth
  • difficulty eating, especially hard foods
  • excessive bad breath
  • staining on the teeth and/or gums

Dental Services Offered By Our Veterinary Clinic

We offer a wide range of services here in our veterinary clinic. The most common dental service we provide is that of comprehensive examinations, which allow us to take a look inside your pet's mouth and check for plaque build-up, staining, and other signs of potential problems. From there, if necessary, we can let you know about our specific recommendations for treatment. In some cases, this is nothing more than a thorough dental cleaning, which allows us to remove plaque and tartar build-up from your pet's teeth as well as polishing the enamel.

In some cases, more extensive treatment may be required to address dental problems. For example, tooth extractions may become necessary if any of your pet's teeth have become decayed to the point of being unable to save through a traditional filling. If your pet is in need of an extraction, we will carefully place your pet under anesthesia to ensure that he or she is as comfortable as possible throughout the process and doesn't feel any pain or discomfort. In other cases, we may be able to save your pet's tooth or teeth by simply filling any cavities.
